Our Big Trip

In November 2013 we relocated from New York to London, heading west. Here’s our rough itinerary with California, Fiji and Australia and pretty planned out, but Asia is up in the air. We had a rough plan but if we liked somewhere we wanted the freedom to hang around. The Green pins are our start in that location, the Blue indicate some of our destinations and the Red are our final stop in that area.

California – two weeks

California Route

Starting out in San Fran, we spent a few days seeing the sites before heading over to Napa to spend three days tasting in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. After that we picked up a car from San Fran and hit the road – starting at Point Reyes in the north, driving South over a week down to LA. From there it was on to Fiji…

Fiji – ten days

Fiji Route

Flying into Nadi we headed straight out to the islands, hopping between the Octopus and the Blue Lagoon, before returning to the mainland to spend Christmas on Denarau Island. After Fiji it was on to Australia…

Australia – three weeks

Australia Route

Flying into Cairns we spent a week in Queensland exploring the Great Barrier Reef before heading north up to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest. After that we went down to Sydney for a week seeing the sites – the Opera House, Bondi and Manley Beaches – before heading out to the Blue Mountains.  Then we travelled over to Melbourne to drive the Great Ocean Road, attend the Australian Open and see the penguin parade at Phillip Island. After Oz we were off to Indonesia…

Indonesia – ten days

Indonesia Route

Upon arriving in Bali we headed straight to Seminiyak to relax on the beach, have some cocktails and watch the surfers. We then went off to the spiritual capital and rice fields of Ubud (where Eat, Pray,Love was set). After a few days meditating we planned to head to the relaxing Gili Islands on Lombok a popular snorkeling and diving destination, but high waves meant we detoured and spent a few days in Sanur and Ulu Watu. From there we flew to Thailand…

Asia – two and a bit months

Asia Route

Arriving in Bangkok we headed clockwise round Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia before finishing up in southern Thailand and their islands. This part of the trip was pretty unplanned but our must do lists included: taking a cooking class in Thailand, visiting an elephant sanctuary in Laos, taking a junk boat cruise in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, seeing the temples at Angkor Wat, Cambodia and enjoying the beaches and diving in southern Thailand. After that was back to the real world and a flight back to London…

  1. sounds amazing! My husband and I spent three months in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Bali a couple of years ago – it’s how my blog was started too. Laos was our favourite, no question. You’ll need at least a week in Luang Prabang, it’s such a beautiful city, and so chilled out…have fun!

      • If you check out my blog, I have about 6-7 posts on what we did in Laos. If you only have a short time, I would probably bypass Vientiane and head to more exciting destinations – Vang Vieng is fun (although a little mad), and as suggested, Luang Prabang is amazing. We did the 2 day slow boat trip from LP across the border into Thailand and would highly recommend that (reversed, of course to fit your itinerary).
