After St. Ives we spent a weekend in Padstow, often referred to as Padstein due to the abundance of Rick Stein restaurants in town. We sampled a lot of great food and drink whilst in town and also explored Rock, just over the water.
Struggling to find a B&B that would have us plus a munchkin we stayed at the old school Hotel Metropole, overlooking the harbour. On our first evening we explored the little village and harbour before having dinner at Rojanos.
After a hearty breakfast, and with rain in the afternoon schedule, we set off early taking the ferry over to Rock. There’s a huge sandy beach which is present all the way up the inlet to the sea and many a dog was enjoying their freedom. We set off on the coastal path to New Polzeath and Hayle Bay.
It takes about an hour to walk through the dunes, along the beaches and over the cliffs. The views are beautiful, even in declining weather. We passed through Daymer Bay before arriving at Hayle Bay to watch the surfers and eat our packed lunch.
Saturday night was Rick Stein time and a 530pm res at St. Petroc’s Bistro with its focus on steak. Charlotte was getting pretty fidgety after our starters so we asked if we could hang out in the library until our mains arrived. Instead they asked if we just wanted to eat in there instead! Voila, a private dining room just to make us feel welcome.
The food and experience was excellent and Charlotte entertained herself by rearranging he bookshelves. We even managed to get her to sleep in the pushchair and have desert and a glass of prosecco – for the first time in a year we were out after 7pm! A great way to end a superb trip.
